Volunteer Info

Volunteers are a very important aspect of the Jim McDonnell Lake Swim. For the race, there are actually two separate events on two different days; a swim clinic and the race.

The table below describes each of the various volunteer roles needed on race day for the JMLS race.

Please review the various roles and then go to the volunteer
registration to signup.

Role Description
Equipment Crew Pick up event equipment from the storage sheds on Friday morning, set up and take down equipment on clinic swim day (Saturday) and race day (Sunday) and return the equipment to the sheds at the end of the event on Sunday afternoon. Volunteers can sign up to help for any or all needs through the event.
Race Packet Stuffing One evening just prior to the event, help prepare the race and clinic packets with timing chips and bib numbers for each swimmer entered. The medals are also put together and packed that evening.
Clinic and Race Day Check In People are needed to check swimmer IDs, hand out race packets and caps, body mark racers with their race numbers, hand out event tee shirts, and hand out ‘goodies’ from sponsors.
Canoes, Kayaks and Paddle boards: These volunteers are part of our water safety crew. (Lifeguards are a paid position and can contact Darren Green at redfox714@gmail.com to work the event.) Each canoe will have a lifeguard and a paddler. The paddler’s job in each canoe is to allow the guard to concentrate on watching swimmers while the paddler concentrates on maintaining the boat’s assigned position. Kayakers and Paddle boarders need not be lifeguard certified, but are rovers keeping a watch for swimmers that might need help. Canoes and canoe paddles are provided. Kayakers and Paddle boarders need to provide their own equipment.
Clinic and Race Day First Aid: A first aid tent is set up on site. Medical professionals or those trained in first aid are preferred, but not a must.
Clinic and Race Day Line Marshals Line Marshals are responsible for helping the swimmers line up in their appropriate waves, check them in on the line, check whether they are swimming category I or II, and make sure that they start through the appropriate starting chute.
Then, as swimmers finish the race the line marshals cheer them through the finishing chute, collect their bib tags, and provide water or other aid to any swimmer who might need help.
